From the towering eagles of Middle-earth to the loyal dire wolves of Westeros, fantasy television transports us to worlds filled with magnificent creatures. But what if these beasts aren’t purely imagination? As new seasons of beloved shows like House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power, and The Wheel of Time approach, let’s explore how today’s most popular fantasy series draw inspiration from real-world wildlife—both ancient and modern.

1. Prehistoric Giants of the Sky: Middle-earth’s Eagles

""

When Gandalf summons the great eagles in The Lord of the Rings and The Rings of Power, we witness creatures of awe-inspiring majesty. These winged saviors of Middle-earth may seem like pure fantasy, but they share striking similarities with a real prehistoric predator: the Haast’s eagle of New Zealand.

With a wingspan reaching 10 feet, the Haast’s eagle was the largest known eagle species in history. These magnificent hunters were powerful enough to prey on the giant moa bird, showcasing the kind of strength that could easily inspire Tolkien’s vision of Gwaihir and his noble kin.

2. The Legacy of the Dire Wolf

""

Perhaps no creatures in recent fantasy have captured audiences’ imagination quite like the dire wolves of Game of Thrones. While the show portrays these animals as supernaturally large and uniquely bonded to the Stark family, their namesakes once roamed North America during the Pleistocene epoch.

Fossil records from the La Brea Tar Pits reveal that real dire wolves were indeed impressive—larger and more robust than today’s gray wolves, though not quite as massive as their television counterparts. These prehistoric predators went extinct around 13,000 years ago, but their legacy lives on in Martin’s epic tale.

3. Noble Hounds and Swift Hares

""

The Wheel of Time brings us commanding hounds that echo the majesty of the Irish Wolfhound, a breed whose history stretches back to ancient times. These real-life giants of the dog world, originally bred for hunting large game, share the same commanding presence as their fantasy counterparts.

The show’s swift-footed hares mirror the incredible speed and resilience of real jackrabbits, proving that sometimes reality can be just as impressive as fiction.

4. Warriors of the Wild: The Warg Legacy

""

Both Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings feature wargs, though in distinctly different ways. While Tolkien’s wargs serve as fearsome mounts for evil forces, Martin’s “warging” represents a mystical bond between humans and animals. These interpretations draw from Norse mythology while incorporating real wolf behaviors—their intelligence, loyalty, and fierce independence.

5. Serpents of Legend

""

When The Witcher presents its monstrous snakes, it taps into both our primal fears and our fascination with these powerful creatures. These fantasy serpents might seem far-fetched until you learn about Titanoboa, a prehistoric snake that grew up to 42 feet long. These real-world giants once dominated ancient rainforests, making the show’s fearsome reptiles seem almost plausible.

6. The Last Great Deer

""

The majestic deer accompanying the Elves in The Rings of Power might seem like pure fantasy, but they bear a striking resemblance to the extinct Irish Elk. This real-world creature was the largest deer species ever, sporting antlers up to 12 feet wide. Like their fantasy counterparts, these magnificent animals embodied a kind of natural grandeur that seems almost magical.

Where Fantasy Meets Reality

As new seasons of our favorite fantasy shows approach, these connections between fictional beasts and real-world creatures remind us that the most compelling fantasy often has roots in reality. The prehistoric world was filled with creatures that could easily populate any fantasy realm—from giant eagles soaring overhead to powerful wolves stalking through ancient forests.

These shows don’t just create new worlds; they invite us to see the magic in our own world’s history. They remind us that Earth once hosted creatures as impressive as any fantasy beast, making us wonder what other amazing animals might have roamed our planet in ages past.
